BBS RS wheels on a Volvo 240

I get quite a few questions about my wheels – “Are those real BBS RS?” – “Where did they come from?” – “How much did they cost?” etc. – so I thought I’d write up a post on that.

First off, I am NOT the first person to put BBS RS on a 240.  And not the last, I’m sure.  But, here is some information I’ve compiled, divided into various considerations.

This is my car, with BBS RS model RS028 in the front (16″ x 7″) and RS029 in the back (16″ x 8″) with no spacers or adapters.  The tires are Goodyear Eagle GT.  Fronts are 205/55/16.  Rears are 225/50/16.

BBS RS History

The RS is one of BBS’ most famous road wheels. It was introduced in 1983, and is believed to be the first three-piece road wheel produced globally. The RS model was produced up until 1995, when it was replaced by the 2-piece RS II wheel.  The BBS RS center is made of forged aluminum and was originally finished in silver or gold. There are many diameters available, ranging from 15 to 18 inches, and most used 34 small bolts per wheel.

The 3-piece design uses of an outer rim, an inner barrel, and the center section (usually gold or silver). The center cap is aluminum and threaded, and attaches by screwing on to the wheel’s center section, or for some models, the center caps snap on. BBS RS wheels are very light (about 6.8 kg (15 lbs) each, for the 15″ sizes) and reasonably strong given their light weight. While BBS made RS wheels to fit many popular vehicles, most were not installed at the factory. Some dealers would sell them as an optional accessory, however, or the wheels could be ordered from BBS or from a wheel distributor.

 

Cost Considerations

Given that even the newest RS is almost 20 years old, BBS RS wheels can be relatively scarce.  While the wheels had a 12 year production run, they were expensive at the time and some sizes were much more popular than others.  For anything that is widely available, you should expect to pay at least $250, to as much as $750, per wheel depending on condition (for example, less than $500 for a damaged wheel, and over $500 for a good condition, or refinished wheel) and of course the desirability of the fitment and the desirability of the size (diameter and width).  Expect professional refinishing to cost $250 to $500 per wheel, and tires another $100 to $250 per wheel.

Altogether, a total cost for a set of BBS RS with tires will likely range from about $1500 (you got a good deal if they’re undamaged) to well over triple that amount for rare fitments and good tires.

 

Refinishing / Rebuilding

Ideally, BBS RS wheels should have professional refinishing.  It is something that you can do yourself, but odds are pretty high that you won’t do as good of a job as a professional.  There are numerous guides online for refinishing multi-piece wheels, but keep in mind that it is a lot of work. See here and here for examples.

Some considerations: The aluminum outer rims (the rims you see when looking at the car) have a clear coat on them from the factory, which will need to be peeled.  Badly bent or cracked inner and outer rims will need to be replaced.  Minor damage can be repaired by a professional (cracks can be welded, etc.) without full replacement.  Removal of all small bolts (30+ per wheel) is required.  Proper torque settings must be observed (22-25 ft-lbs per bolt) when reassembling the wheels, and new bolts are recommended if available, using a small drop of blue Loctite (or a similar non-permanent thread-locking compound).  But there is a lot more to it than that, so make sure to do your research before you refinish them yourself.

 

Lug nuts – Conical/Tapered Seat vs. Ball/Radius Seat

Some BBS RS wheels are designed for ball seat lug nuts, such as the RS028 and RS029 wheels that I have.  Volvo, on the other hand, uses conical seat lug nuts.

While you can technically use an a conical seat lug nut to hold on a ball seat wheel, it’s NOT a good idea, and can result in damage to the wheel, or worst case, a wheel coming off while you are driving!  The conical lug nut ends up only gripping at the very bottom of the ball-shaped lug nut seat.

So what did I do?  Well, I couldn’t find ball seat lugnuts that fit my 240’s lugs – they are American 1/2″ x 20 TPI.  So, I used these adapter washers.   So far they have held up decently well in the last year of daily driving (and the lugnuts stay torqued, which is essential), and they fit perfectly in the wells in the BBS wheels.  My only complaint is that some of the chrome plating on the washers comes off each time I use them.

 

Cap Wrench

One thing you will definitely need is a BBS RS center cap wrench.  Your set of wheels should come with one, or alternatively, you can make your own by getting a piece of a soft wood (pine or something, like a 1″ x 6″ x 12″ piece), tracing the center cap pattern, and then using a sharp chisel to cut out a hexagon.  I do NOT recommend using a large pair of channel lock pliers, unless you permanently glue a lot rubber to the jaws (bike inner tubes work for this).  If you use channel locks and a rag, you are risking slipping off and banging up your irreplaceable center caps and/or wheels.

Valve Stems

One other tip, is that before you mount the tires you can get a valve-stem concealer kit.  You end up with a look like my wheels above, where the valve stem is something you keep in your glove box, and then is attached to each wheel to fill it up, after removing the cap over the hole.  These kits are available at many auto parts stores, and are often sold as “flush mount valve stems”.

Tire Selection

My tires are Goodyear Eagle GT.  Fronts are 205/55/16.  Rears are 225/50/16.  I like these tires because the rear’s are pretty wide so you get nice curb protection, and the Goodyear Eagle GT design has a nice thick rubber bead near the edge of the rim that serves as additional curbing protection.  Given the cost and rarity of these wheels, you really want to be careful with them.

This 1992 240 has the same wheels, but in these photos has a different tire size, and uses the same size on all four wheels: Hankook Ventus v2, size 205/50/16.  The front’s aren’t much different in size, but using a smaller tire on the back wheels has the advantage of being less likely to rub on the fender, but the disadvantage of providing less protection against curbs.  There is also a difference in the look that some people may prefer, one way or the other.

The Real Thing vs. Knock-offs

Because of the BBS RS’s popularity in motorsport, countless knockoffs were produced.  A handful were true 3-piece wheels, such as those made by Epsilon in the 1980s, and are very good wheels.  Often these are also designed for a Ferrari application, but there are sometimes sets that were originally designed to fit Volvo (240 and 740 Turbo models, for example).

There were also some 2-piece wheels that look similar to BBS RS, and were made with high end manufacturing.  An example of these would be the old ARE 2-piece wheels that were available in the 1980s and 1990s.

The majority of BBS knock-offs, however, were inexpensive one-piece wheels, with centers painted gold to mimic the style, but were not forged, nor were they particularly light weight.  There are so many of these that I’m not going to post pictures – once you start looking for them, you’ll see them everywhere.  On the other hand, knock-offs are much less expensive, and there are a lot of them made by ARE and MSW that fit perfectly, with no fiddling, on rear-wheel drive Volvos.

So, buyer beware!  If you think you are getting an amazing deal on “real” BBS RS, you are probably being scammed – or they may be made by BBS, but are actually “RS II” or “Style 5”, both of which look similar (and are very good wheels).

The Real Thing vs. The Modern Thing

For the money, and the time it takes to find a set of BBS RS and make them fit well on your Volvo, you might be better off getting new wheels from a high end manufacturer.  If you’re looking for a high-end wheel that looks similar to the RS, check out Kodiak Racing, who makes a similar design and will drill the bolt pattern and bore the centers to your specifications.  Rob Prince’s 242 uses these wheels, and they look fantastic.

Further, BBS makes, or made, many other wheels with a similar style – the BBS RS II, the BBS Style 5, etc. – that you can find (rarely) in a direct fit, and often in other sizes to use with adapters.  Additionally, ESM makes a BBS RS replica that is about $700 a set, in a variety of bolt patterns.  These are the most likely new wheels you would find that you could confuse with real RS, but of course, they have different center caps, and won’t be stamped on the inside (near the lugnuts) with the usual BBS information.  You can check out ESM’s website for more information.

BBS RS Sizes and fitment

BBS RS wheels come in a multitude of sizes.  Because they are 3-piece wheels, they can be set up to pretty much any bolt pattern (by changing the center section), any offset, and any width (by changing the inner and/or outer rims).  Further, these three pieces can be found in almost a variety of diameters (15-18″).

Here is a table of all BBS RS wheels that I could find.  The 5 x 108mm bolt patterns have been bolded for convenience.

Best fit – RS111, RS112, RS209

Only the models original intended for Volvo’s have the correct offset (10-20mm) and center bore (65.1mm).   These are RS111 (7 x 16), RS112 (7.5 x 16), and RS209 (7 x 15).  They are very uncommon – I have only seen one set for sale in 10 years on the Volvo scene.  I’m not sure I have ever seen a set on a car, whether online or in person.

Relatively Easy fit – RS028 / RS029 combo

My car has the RS028 in the front and RS029 in the back, a set that was originally designed for the mid-80’s Ferrari 308 models.  These wheels would be “staggered” – wider in the back than the front – this results in a pretty good look for a RWD car, and the fit isn’t too difficult to get working.  I have seen four sets of these for sale on Volvo forums over the years, and they occasionally come up on Ebay and Ferrari forums.

While the offset of this model is “wrong” for a Volvo, these wheels actually fit fine on a 240 – as long as you’re willing to roll and/or cut your fender lips in the back (see this post).  The result is that they stick out much more than “stock” wheels and in rainy weather, the sides of your car will get dirty faster.  On the other hand, this wide stance improves the look of the car, and also the handling (although the steering is more twitchy due to the wider stance in the front, and takes some getting used to).

The other consideration when fitting these is the center bore:

  • For the front wheel (RS028), the center bore is 58mm, so a good wheel specialty shop can easily bore them up to the Volvo 200/700/900 standard size of 65.1mm.  Make sure you check your front hubs on your car, and figure out how DEEP you want the bore, so that you only remove as much metal as is really necessary.
  • For the rear wheel (RS029), the center bore is 67mm (1.9mm too big) but it is not as deep as what is needed for a Volvo.  There are two options here.  You can measure the depth you need, go to a shop, and have them bore the wheel at 67mm wide and slightly deeper.  Then get a 1.9mm thick hubcentric ring made by a machinist to fill the gap (pretty cheap, since it’s just an aluminum ring).  The other option is to have the machine shop bore the wheel center at 65.1 mm, for only the part that is deeper.  This will result in not as much “grip” of the wheel on the hub as with a 67mm bore and a 1.9mm ring, but the wheel will still be centered on the hub at least.

Finally, depending on what type of front brake calipers you have, you may need 5mm spacers to get the front wheels to clear the brakes.  I didn’t need spacers on my 1993 240 with ABS, but the owner of the black 1992 244 pictured below did need them, even with (what should be the same, but probably aren’t, knowing volvo) ABS calipers.

Challenging Fit – RS084/RS085 combo

This would be an interesting possibility on a RWD Volvo, but with challenging widths – 8″ wide up front, and 11″ wide in the back – and only a 15″ diameter, there aren’t really the best choice.  First off, compared to the RS028 above, the RS084 front wheel is one inch wider (25.4mm) but has only a 12mm change in offset, so the wheel will stick out about 13mm further.  From my estimates, these front wheels should still clear the Volvo factory brake rotors, but they may end up needing spacers because of the 15″ diameter.

More importantly, for the back wheels, the RS085 is a full 3″ wider (51mm) than the RS029, but only has an offset change of of 37mm to compensate.  So the wheels will stick out about 14mm more (definitely causing fender clearance issues on a 240 unless the fenders are modified significantly or stretched tires are used), and there is a pretty good chance that the wheel will interfere with the rear brakes, given that it is only 15″ in diameter.

Adapters Required – Anything else

But what about the RS119 – it’s 10 x 16″ and 5 x 108mm bolt pattern.  The problem is the offset – at 43mm, this wheel will never clear the brakes on a RWD Volvo.  It will need either adapters, or longer wheel studs installed on the car and big spacers – maybe 50mm or more.

For the rest of the wheels, a large number of them can be made to fit – anything with a decent positive offset to give room for the adapters.  You’re on your own here – you will have to find a set of wheels that will work, and then get the right adapters to put behind them.
